Manchester, July 24 – Tottenham Hotspur are keeping a close eye on Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo amid growing uncertainty over his long-term future at Old Trafford.
Mainoo, 20, has yet to agree a contract extension with United, despite his current deal running until 2027. Talks have not progressed as expected, raising questions over the midfielder’s role under new manager Rúben Amorim — especially after a difficult 2024/25 campaign disrupted by injuries and tactical reshuffling.
Spurs are understood to be monitoring the situation closely, aware that Mainoo’s value could rise further if he continues his upward trajectory both domestically and on the international stage.
Despite his struggles last season, the Stockport-born midfielder remains one of United’s brightest young talents. Since breaking into the senior squad with a debut against Charlton Athletic in January 2023, Mainoo has gone on to make 72 appearances under three different managers — Erik ten Hag, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and now Amorim — scoring seven goals and providing two assists.
His finest moment in a United shirt came in the 2024 FA Cup final, when he scored a dramatic winner in a 2–1 victory over Manchester City at Wembley, cementing his place in Red Devils folklore.
Mainoo’s performances also caught the eye of England boss Gareth Southgate, who handed him his senior debut in March 2024. The midfielder became a regular fixture during Euro 2024, starting in all four of England’s knockout matches — including the final against Spain.
While United still hope to tie down their No. 37 to a new long-term deal, hesitation on both sides has created an opening that Spurs — and potentially other top clubs — could look to exploit in the months ahead.
Should contract talks continue to stall, Mainoo could find himself at the centre of one of the Premier League’s biggest transfer storylines next summer.
