Naples, July 15, 2025 — Napoli have officially informed Liverpool that their pursuit of Darwin Núñez is over, with the Italian club deciding to walk away from negotiations due to the high asking price, according to multiple reports.
Despite Núñez being open to the move, Napoli have opted to proceed with the signing of Lorenzo Lucca from Udinese instead. The decision brings an end to days of speculation linking the Uruguayan striker with a switch to Serie A, as Napoli prioritized financial prudence in finalizing their new striker signing.
Núñez, 26, was identified as a potential target by Napoli earlier in the summer, but Liverpool’s valuation was deemed too steep. With the Lucca deal now at its final stages — featuring a €9 million loan fee and €26 million obligation to buy — Napoli have formally ruled out any move for Núñez.
The striker’s future, however, remains uncertain. Liverpool are still expected to part ways with Núñez this summer, with interest continuing to grow from Saudi Pro League clubs and other European teams. The Uruguayan forward, who joined the Reds from Benfica in 2022, has had an inconsistent spell at Anfield and is believed to be open to new opportunities.
As things stand, Núñez’s exit appears increasingly likely — just not to Naples.
