Luka Jović Set to Join AEK Athens After Turning Down Real Oviedo and Cruz Azul

Athens, August 4 – Luka Jović is on the verge of a new chapter in his career, with the former Real Madrid and AC Milan striker set to join Greek side AEK Athens on a deal running until June 2027. The 27-year-old Serbian forward is currently in Athens to complete his medical and finalise the free transfer.

According to Marca, Jović rejected a concrete offer from newly promoted La Liga side Real Oviedo, despite weeks of advanced negotiations. He also turned down interest from Mexican club Cruz Azul, signalling a clear preference for a move to the Greek Super League in search of consistent playing time and a long-overdue career revival.

Once considered one of Europe’s most exciting young strikers, Jović has struggled to find form since his high-profile €63 million move to Real Madrid in 2019. He netted just three goals in 51 appearances for the Spanish giants and was unable to rediscover his spark during subsequent stints at Fiorentina and AC Milan. Although he managed 13 goals in 47 appearances for Milan, injuries and inconsistent minutes continued to hamper his progress.

The Serbian’s career has yet to reach the heights many expected following his explosive spell at Eintracht Frankfurt, where he famously scored five goals in a single Bundesliga match—becoming the youngest player in league history to do so.

Now a free agent after his contract with Milan expired earlier this summer, Jović sees AEK Athens as the right environment to reset and rebuild. The Greek club, who are pushing to contend both domestically and in Europe, have offered him a stable platform and a leading role in their attack.

Pending the completion of his medical, the deal is expected to be announced soon, with Jović hoping Athens can be the place where his once-promising career finally gets back on track.
