Howe Addresses Isak Absence Amid Transfer Speculation

Newcastle, 20 July 2025 – Alexander Isak was notably absent from Newcastle United’s squad during their 4-0 pre-season defeat to Celtic, and manager Eddie Howe has confirmed the omission was a deliberate decision in light of growing speculation over the striker’s future.

“It was my decision [to leave out Isak],” Howe told reporters post-match. “I decided to send him home due to all the speculation.”

The Swedish international has been linked with a move away from St. James’ Park this summer, with several top clubs reportedly monitoring his situation. Newcastle, however, have made it clear that they are not ready to let the 25-year-old leave.

Isak was Newcastle’s top scorer in the Premier League last season with 23 goals and has quickly become a fan favourite on Tyneside. Yet his absence from a high-profile friendly clash has only added fuel to the speculation surrounding his immediate future.

As the transfer window heats up, Howe and Newcastle will be hoping to retain one of their most prized assets while navigating what could become one of the summer’s most-watched sagas.
