Milan, August 2 – Barcelona’s interest in Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries has reportedly cooled after the club failed to meet the player’s €25 million release clause. The Catalan giants had identified the Dutch international as a potential reinforcement for their right-back position but found themselves priced out of a move amid ongoing financial constraints.
The 29-year-old, known for his athleticism and attacking intent down the flank, has been a consistent performer in Serie A since joining Inter from PSV Eindhoven in 2021. Barcelona had been monitoring his situation closely, but the €25m valuation proved to be a stumbling block for a club still operating under tight La Liga financial fair play restrictions.
Complicating matters further is Dumfries’ recent decision to switch agents. The Netherlands international is now represented by Jorge Mendes, one of football’s most powerful intermediaries. Mendes, who also represents the likes of João Félix and Ansu Fati, has strong ties to Barcelona, which has only intensified speculation about Dumfries’ future.
While no formal negotiations are believed to be underway at this stage, Mendes’ involvement has sparked a wave of fresh transfer rumours, with clubs across Europe reportedly alerted to Dumfries’ availability.
For Barcelona, the hunt for a new right-back continues. The club remains keen to bolster its defensive options but will likely need to explore more financially viable alternatives unless Inter are willing to negotiate below the release clause.
Dumfries, meanwhile, remains under contract at the San Siro, and Inter are said to be in no rush to part ways with the experienced full-back unless their valuation is met.
