Eddie Howe Addresses Isak Uncertainty Amid Liverpool and Saudi Interest

Newcastle, July 26 – Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has admitted that talks are ongoing behind the scenes regarding Alexander Isak’s future, as speculation intensifies around the striker’s long-term position at the club.

Isak, who netted an impressive 23 Premier League goals during the 2024/25 campaign, is understood to be open to a move away from St James’ Park this summer. The Sweden international, 25, is attracting serious interest from Liverpool and multiple clubs in Saudi Arabia, with sources suggesting he is seeking a staggering €300 million salary package to remain on Tyneside—an unrealistic figure that may accelerate his exit.

Speaking ahead of the club’s pre-season fixture, Howe acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his star forward but stopped short of confirming any imminent departure.

“He’s very popular in the dressing room. We’d love him to continue his journey at Newcastle,” said Howe. “Things are going on behind the scenes. Conversations are happening between Alex, myself and the club. They will stay private. Whatever happens has to be for the best of the club.”

Despite recent speculation, Howe confirmed that no contract negotiations are currently underway. “There are no contract talks taking place. That will be for a later date, potentially. I certainly hope he stays. In football, who knows what the future may bring,” he added.

Isak is under contract with Newcastle until the summer of 2028, having joined from Real Sociedad in 2022 for a club-record fee. His clinical finishing, movement, and technical ability have made him one of the Premier League’s standout forwards over the past two seasons.

With Liverpool considering attacking reinforcements and Saudi clubs willing to make significant financial offers, Newcastle face a pivotal few weeks. The Magpies are still active in the transfer market themselves, holding talks with both Yoane Wissa and Benjamin Šeško as potential replacements should Isak depart.

For now, Howe remains hopeful of keeping his No. 14 — but the situation is evolving quickly.
