Madrid, July 22, 2025 – Atlético Madrid have officially opened talks with Chelsea over a potential deal for versatile defender Renato Veiga, with club-to-club negotiations beginning today.
The 21-year-old has already given the green light to a move to the Spanish capital, and Atlético are expected to submit their opening offer shortly. Chelsea, however, are holding firm on a €40 million package, which they believe reflects Veiga’s potential and positional versatility.
Primarily deployed as a centre-back, Veiga is also capable of playing as a left-back or in a defensive midfield role—qualities that have attracted interest from Diego Simeone, who is keen to reinforce his squad with adaptable and dynamic options.
Veiga’s career trajectory has been one of steady progression. A product of Sporting CP’s academy, he spent time on loan at Bundesliga side Augsburg in early 2023 before joining Swiss outfit Basel that summer. His performances in the Swiss Super League earned him a move to Chelsea in July 2024, though first-team opportunities were limited. He made just seven appearances before being loaned out to Juventus for the second half of last season.
Despite his limited action at Stamford Bridge, Atlético view Veiga as a long-term asset and are confident they can secure a deal. Talks are expected to continue throughout the week, with both clubs working to find common ground on a fee structure that suits all parties.
Should the move go through, Veiga would become the latest young talent to depart Chelsea as the club looks to streamline its squad under new management, while Atlético Madrid would be gaining a highly promising player ready for a fresh start in La Liga.
