Jules Koundé looks set to remain at Barcelona, with the French defender verbally agreeing to a new contract despite recent speculation linking him with a summer exit.
Talks over an extension have been progressing since June, and sources close to the negotiations now indicate that all parties are confident a full agreement will be finalised in the coming weeks. Koundé has made it clear to new head coach Hansi Flick that his intention is to stay at the club and be part of the German’s plans moving forward.
Since arriving from Sevilla in 2022, the 26-year-old has established himself as a key figure in Barcelona’s backline. He has already racked up 96 appearances in all competitions and has played an important role in the club’s recent success, helping the Blaugrana to back-to-back La Liga titles.
Koundé’s versatility—capable of playing both at centre-back and right-back—has made him an invaluable asset in a squad that is continuing to evolve under new management. Despite reported interest from several European clubs earlier this summer, Barcelona have never seriously entertained the idea of selling the France international.
With his current deal set to be upgraded, the extension would underline the club’s confidence in Koundé as a central part of their project under Flick. It would also serve as a strong statement amid a transfer window that has seen speculation swirl around several high-profile names at Camp Nou.
As things stand, the agreement is expected to be formalised soon, keeping Koundé at the heart of Barcelona’s defence for years to come.
